Tropical Storm Noel, formerly known as Tropical Depression Sixteen, is dumping on the Dominican Republic, but its path looks like it will keep away from South Florida.

The South Florida forecast called for gusty winds, rough seas, significant beach erosion and strong rip currents through Thursday.

“The track is very uncertain,” said Rusty Pfost, meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service’s South Florida office. “This is not something we should be overly concerned about, but we certainly need to keep aware of it.”

Meanwhile, warnings and watches were posted in Haiti, Jamaica and Cuba, including a precautionary hurricane watch for Cuba’s eastern provinces.

“It is not out of the question that Noel could become a hurricane prior to passing over Cuba,” said hurricane specialist Rick Knabb of the National Hurricane Center in West Miami-Dade County.
