No sooner is the election over and the political ads are gone than they are replaced by Christmas ads; it’s already a “magic time” at Home Depot.
Actually, I could tell they were gearing up even before the election was over; ads for the Houdini corkscrew were running on cable channels before Hallowe’en, and that’s a bellwether ad for holiday gifting, as are the ones for cologne, perfume and elegant chocolate. Since the economy is in the crapper, I expect these ads to get more wistful if not desperate.
I feel sorry for the retailers; all signs point to a lousy Christmas sales season, and they didn’t bring this on themselves. So I can put up with their attempts to sell me stuff even if it’s three weeks before Thanksgiving.
