The California Supreme Court announced that it will issue a ruling today on whether or not proponents of Prop 8 have the right to defend the law in court so when the state’s officials have decided not to.
If the court rules against the proponents, then the case has no defendants and that could mean the end of it. It’s not a ruling on the constitutionality of the law, but it’s an important decision nonetheless, so I’ll keep my eye on it and let you know what happens.
Update: The court ruled unanimously that the proponents had standing. The case now goes back to the 9th Circuit, and then, regardless of the outcome, to the Supreme Court.
