Via Steve Benen, Mitt Romney is trying out a new slogan for his campaign.

“There are people in this room who are informed and who care about this election, who recognize that this is a defining time for America,” he said. “We have on one side a president who wants to transform America into a European-style nation, and you have on other hand someone like myself that wants to turn around America and keep America American….”

If “keep America American” has a familiar ring to it, then you’ve been keeping up with your history of the Ku Klux Klan.

I’ll give the Romney campaign the benefit of the doubt and allow that they’re just idiots who have never heard of the Google and didn’t check to see that the slogan has been used by a variety of racist and anti-Semitic groups in recent history. Hey, if it’s not on Twitter, it doesn’t exist, right?

But what they’re trying to get away with is yet another dog whistle to all the people who still see President Obama as Not Our Kind, Dear; he’s not truly an American, and really, what is the story on that birth certificate?

It’s not the first time that Mr. Romney has questioned the patriotism of the president, and it won’t be the last, trust me.
