Shotgun Marriage — Updated

North Carolina is preparing to vote on a constitutional amendment that would ban not just same-sex marriage, but any kind of civil union between people regardless of gender; i.e. a man and a woman living together and sharing property. Amendment One is both redundant — North Carolina already has a law on the books that prohibits same-sex marriage — and it’s so overreaching that even some prominent Republicans in the state are against it.

Pam Spaulding and Joe Jervis have been all over the story, including the pearl-clutching on behalf of the pro-Amendment One people such as the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) about the big bad bullies of the pro-marriage equality people. The Radical Homosexuals are tyrants! And scary! They’re even beating up little old ladies! (They’re not? Oh, but it sounds good. Go with it.)

Here’s an example of how some of the defenders of straight marriage are quaking in their boots.

Nice people.

Update: As you can see, the video of the defender of traditional marriage had the video taken down due to a copyright claim. Yeah, right. That’s the ticket. The fact that he’s become a subject of scorn and derision — not to mention possible legal action — has nothing to do with copyright claim, but hey, when you’re a sniveling bigot, then that’s how you roll.

In case you didn’t see it, the video depicted a young man — probably late teens or early twenties — describing how the good people of North Carolina feel about same-sex marriage. He then loads a shotgun and fires two rounds at a VOTE NO ONE AMENDMENT ONE yard sign. “That’s how we do it.” Genius.
