Eduardo Saverin, one of the founders of Facebook, has renounced his U.S. citizenship for reasons he says have absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he would get hit with a $67 million tax bill when the company goes public later this month.

This had nothing to do with taxes. I was born in Brazil, I was an American citizen for about 10 years. I thought of myself as a global citizen.

Just a coincidence, I’m sure.

A lot of right-wingers consider him a genuine American hero for sticking it to Uncle Sam. Yes, those patriotic America Love-It-Or-Leave-It folks are supporting a guy who skips the country to avoid a tax bill.

It reminds me of all the Jesus-shouters who are waiting for the Rapture to come along and sweep all the holy people to heaven, leaving the rest of us here to just muddle through without them. Well, if they’re so enamored of leaving the country to avoid taxes, I say go ahead; take off. You’ll save money, and we won’t have to put up with you any more.

There’s a little-known fact that if you renounce your U.S. citizenship for the purpose of avoiding paying taxes, you can’t get a visa to come back.
