A shooting at a mall in Portland, Ore., on Tuesday afternoon left three people dead, including the gunman, and at least one other person injured, police said.
Lt. James Rhodes of the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said the gunman, described as an adult male, shot two people to death and also died of a self-inflicted gunshot.
He said police do not believe there was a second shooter.
A young woman was wounded with a traumatic injury and was transported by ambulance to Oregon Health Science University Hospital around 5:30 p.m., according to a hospital spokesman.
The woman was described as being in “serious” condition, on a scale of “good” to “critical.” OHSU Hospital is one of two level-one trauma centers in Portland.
The shooting, which occurred around 3:20 p.m. in the food court near the Macy’s, triggered panic during the busy holiday season at the Clackamas Town Center. About 10,000 shoppers were at the mall at that time, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Those in line to get their photos taken with Santa immediately dove for cover, KGW reported.
A woman who answered the phone at Chipotle in the mall told NBC News that someone ran in and yelled, “It’s a shooting, it’s a shooting.”
Cue up the NRA and the usual defenders of gun rights who will tell us that if everyone in the mall had a gun — perhaps they could hand them out like umbrella bags — this wouldn’t have happened, and it’s still too early to talk about gun control.
When you’re reading about it the next morning, it’s too late.
