Today is Presidents Day, the federal holiday mashed together to honor Washington’s Birthday and Lincoln’s Birthday which used to be holidays on their own. This one generically honors all presidents, and it’s a mid-winter break for schools and a day off for those of us who work in them. The only thing I have planned is a dental appointment later on this afternoon.
Things will be a little quiet around here.
Well, our Congress is taking the entire week off. They must be so tired from all that hard debating and problem solving that they have done since their last vacation, so now they need a little rest.

Maybe Rubio can have all those water bottles his campaign’s pushing put on his colleagues’ desks: that might freshen them up a bit.
You must admit they work so little that the rest of us should be astonished. When they are in session they accomplish nothing. Then, on top of all that, they say poor folks and the middle class are lazy! Unbelievable, but true!
Here in the private sector it’s just another Monday. One advantage to working in the capital, though: the streets were VERY clear this morning. the commute was about half what it would be any other day. The sad thing is that a lot of the people not on the road commuting to their public-sector jobs this morning are probably home, lingering over their coffee, griping about how much Big Gubmint spends and how it doesn’t “create any jobs.”
Schools get the day off? I went to the park and do my 8 laps and there was one school bus after another. The schools don’t get Memorial, Veterans or President’s day off here. To me the school board here is for lack of another word un-American.
One word: Texas.
There are days I think the only United States pResidents Texas recognizes were named George (and perhaps Ronald, but that’s a stretch), and after them they pay attention to Jefferson Davis and Sam Houston; and the only holidays celebrate “job creators” (celebrating labor went out of fashion when they started to have to pay [for] it every week or two) and “our boys [currently] in uniform” (veterans are “takers” after all).
