The Big S

It’s March 1.  Do you know where your sequester is?

We’ve been down this road so many times it’s getting to be like watching a marathon of Three’s Company on TV Land: you mean we actually once thought this was funny and that Suzanne Sommers was the next Lucille Ball?

Charlie Pierce:

It is flatly bizarre to watch Congress at work one day before we all pass through the dark gates into Sequestration Mordor. In the Senate, the Republicans affect the persona of embattled truth-tellers at the mercy of a unyielding majority. In the House, the Democrats affect the persona of the embattled staff of a more opulent than usual environment. Everyone is pretending that they never saw this coming, that nobody could have imagined that things would come to this terrible pass. They all deplore the results of sequestration, but they all also continue to pretend that it was a good idea to start with, and that is their capital mistake.

I find it hard to believe that this is what those sweaty middle-aged landowners and lawyers had in mind in Philadelphia way back in 1776 and that they actually fought a revolution so that people today could stand up in front of lights in the middle of the Capitol and talk to Ed Schultz about what’s going to happen when there’s no money to pay the Border Patrol.  But then, they didn’t think that a “well regulated militia” would lead to semi-automatic assault rifles being paraded through shopping malls as if they were toddlers in a backpack.

America, heck yeah.

  1. I am not an attorney so my interpretation of certain writings might be way off the mark but I interpret the “a well regulated militia” to mean a group regulated by the authorities such as the armed forces, law enforcement, etc. I don’t think they meant a group of nuts who are only regulated by their desire to live like savages with no accountability.
