Here’s a scary bit of data:
With a number of states still to vote — including the largest, California — Trump is poised to set a new record vote total in Republican presidential primaries. The current record is held by George W. Bush, with his 10.8 million votes in 2000. Trump, according to RealClearPolitics, is currently at a little north of 10 million.
In other words, there are at least 10 million people in this country who think it is perfectly acceptable to have a racist, sexist, xenophobic liar and possible sociopath running as the nominee of a major party for President of the United States. Ten million.
I hope the rest of us — those who actually care about what kind of country we want to live in, where race and gender and the rest of our innate qualities are either irrelevant or an asset and nativism and apple-pie fascism is shunned — will do whatever we can to make this election into a resounding defeat to the point that the Johnson landslide in 1964 looks like a squeaker.
