More Than Funny

Most of us remember Mary Tyler Moore as a gifted comic actor in her roles as Laura Petrie on “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and her eponymous TV series from 1970 to 1977.  But she was able to do brilliant work in serious roles such as her Oscar-nominated portrayal of an icy mother in “Ordinary People” in 1980.

Directed by Robert Redford and co-starring Donald Sutherland, Timothy Hutton, and Judd Hirsch, it showed the quiet desperation of the upper middle class’s inability to deal with the tragedies of ordinary life.  Ms. Moore’s portrayal is amazing.
