A Little Night Music

I bought my first copy of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band at Ries Records in the Westgate Shopping Center in Toledo in June 1967, and it was everywhere that summer. We had it on 8-track in my mom’s 1967 Ford Country Squire, and it was part of what got me through a miserable summer school session in Newport, Rhode Island (along with “Surrealistic Pillow” by the Jefferson Airplane and WBZ-AM out of Boston). I still have a copy on vinyl, a replacement for the original that was stolen out of my apartment in Coconut Grove in 1973 (I know you sold my stuff for drugs, Dean; I just couldn’t prove it), and I bought the CD on the 20th anniversary in 1987 in Boulder. It may not be the best of their albums (“Rubber Soul”? The White Album?), but it changed a lot of people’s views of the group and changed a lot of people, too. I got by with a little help from my friends.
