Trump fired FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday, the same day the FBI confirmed that Comey had incorrectly testified to Congress about Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server.
Trump acted “on the clear recommendations of both Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions,” White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said in a statement. It said a search for a new FBI director will begin “immediately.”
“The FBI is one of our Nation’s most cherished and respected institutions and today will mark a new beginning for our crown jewel of law enforcement,” the statement quoted Trump as saying.
The agency said in a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday that Comey grossly overstated the number of emails that Clinton aide Huma Abedin forwarded to husband, Anthony Weiner, while working at the State Department.
A letter to Comey read in part: “While I greatly appreciate you informing on three separate occasions that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the judgment of the DOJ that you are not able to effectively lead the bureau.
“It is essential that we find new leadership for the FBI that restores public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission.”
A couple of things come to mind: He screwed up in favor of Trump and kept his job. He screwed up against Trump and got fired.
The FBI was in the middle of investigating Trump and his connections with Russia. Just a coincidence, I’m sure.
