Everything Is Beautiful

William Safire ticks off the list of the Bush Administration’s global successes due to their pre-emptive foreign policy, including Libya, Afghanistan, Syria, the West Bank, Iran, and North Korea. His theory is that we have scared the shit out of all these bad guys by invading Iraq, and now the world is all happy and sweet.

Gee, Bill, maybe you ought to check the headlines of your own paper. There are soldiers dying nearly every day in Iraq (which Safire callously compares to the daily murder toll in New York and L.A.), the U.S. military has just recorded its 100th death in Afghanistan, and the Iranian ayatollahs have knocked reform-minded candidates off the ballot in the upcoming “free” elections.

Yeah, it’s all one great big Barney singalong, ain’t it?
