Plugs for Friends

I’ve added some sites on the sidebar that are plugs for some good groups and friends.

  • The Black Swamp Conservancy is dedicated to “encourag[ing] conservation and protection of the natural and agricultural lands in Northwest Ohio for the benefit of future generations.” With the explosive growth outward from large – and not so large – cities, land conservation for both aesthetic and practical reasons is becoming even more critical. Stop by the site and take a look at what they’ve already accomplished.
  • The William Inge Theatre Festival is the only American theatre festival that honors a great American playwright in his own home town. (The only other theatre festival that does that is the one in Stratford-Upon-Avon in England for you-know-who.) William Inge (1913-1973) is best remembered for his plays Picnic, Come Back Little Sheba, Bus Stop, and Dark at the Top of the Stairs, and he won an Academy Award for his screenplay, Splendor In the Grass. Every April since 1982 playwrights, actors, scholars, and members of Inge’s family – along with hundreds of theatre fans from across the country – gather in Independence, Kansas (not to be confused with Independence, Missouri, a suburb of Kansas City – Inge’s Independence is about 70 miles north of Tulsa, Oklahoma) to honor both Inge’s works and to honor a living American playwright. I’ve been attending since 1991 and in that time I’ve met – among others – Robert Anderson, Jerome Lawrence, John Patrick, Edward Albee, Peter Shaffer, Wendy Wasserstein, Terrance McNally, Arthur Miller, August Wilson, Neil Simon, Stephen Sondheim, John Guare, A.R. Gurney, Lanford Wilson, and Romulus Linney. This year the honoree will be Arthur Laurents, author of the books for Gypsy, West Side Story, and many other great plays and musicals.
  • Under the heading Friendly Business Sites I’ve added two:

  • Innovative Audio of Seattle is the place to go if you want the best audio and entertainment systems for your car, boat, or Boeing 737. We’re not talking about the type of system you see (or hear) in some teenager’s Bitsosushi boombox on wheels. Innovative Audio is regarded as one of the best in the business by customers and competitors alike.

  • PC-X Computers is run by a couple of highly-skilled young men here in Miami. They will consult with you to build a computer to fit your needs, not some one-size-fits-all set-up from MegaBigBox. And yes, they’re building one for me.
  • Stop by and take a look.
