Small-Town Tragedy

From the Petoskey News-Review:

State trooper from Petoskey gunned down

BY RYAN BENTLEY NEWS-REVIEW STAFF WRITER AND THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

A former Petoskey resident was one of two police officers fatally shot when a suspect opened fire during a traffic stop on Detroit’s southwest side early Monday.

Detroit police officer Jennifer Fettig, 26, died about 2:50 p.m. Monday at Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital, hours after she was struck by two rounds fired from a handgun. Her partner, officer Matthew Bowens, 21, was pronounced dead when he arrived at Henry Ford earlier in the day.

Fettig, a 1995 graduate of Petoskey High School and the daughter of Tim and Kathy Fettig of Petoskey, had worked for the Detroit Police Department since October 2001.

Before joining the Detroit force, Fettig worked on the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce’s parking enforcement staff from 1999-2001.

A good friend of mine was close to her, and I remember when Jennifer graduated from PHS. I grieve for her family, her fiance, and the Bowens family as well.
