Reggie White

CORNELIUS, N.C. (AP) — Reggie White, a fearsome defensive end for the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers who was one of the great players in NFL history, died Sunday, his wife said. He was 43.

White worked tirelessly in the offseason with inner-city youths. But his image was tarnished when he gave a speech in which he denounced homosexuality and used ethnic stereotypes. White later apologized.

Except he never recanted his anti-gay sentiments. I extend my sympathies to his family and friends for their loss.

Wouldn’t it be a little ironic if the maitre d’ of the Pearly Gates on duty today was Liberace?
