It’s not often I have a friend have the chance to make it to Broadway…in fact, John’s the first one since a college classmate did it way back in the 1970’s. Here he is in the “official” announcement.
John Lloyd Young will star as Frankie Valli in the upcoming Broadway mounting of Jersey Boys, the musical based on the life story of the Four Seasons. Christian Hoff, Daniel Reichard and J. Robert Spencer, who appeared in the La Jolla Playhouse world premiere of the musical, will be reprising their roles on the Great White Way.
Young will be making his Broadway debut in Jersey Boys. His off-Broadway credits include Sarah, Plain and Tall and The Summer of the Swans. Other credits include Paper Mill Playhouse mountings of The Chosen and The Drawer Boy.
Featuring the Four Seasons’ hit songs “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Rag Doll” and “Oh What a Night,” among others, Jersey Boys is the story of how four blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks became the biggest doo-wop sensation of all time. Jersey Boys features a book by Academy and Emmy Award winner Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice and music and lyrics by Bob Gaudio and Bob Crewe. Des McAnuff is the director. Sergio Trujillo serves as choreographer. Ron Melrose is the musical director and orchestrations are by Steve Orich. Jersey Boys received a mixed to positive critical reception during its fall run at the La Jolla Playhouse (David Noroña played Frankie Valli during that mounting).
Jersey Boys will begin previews at the Virginia Theater on October 3 in preparation for a November 6 opening.
I’ve actually known about this since April at the William Inge Festival, but John asked me to keep it quiet until the announcement was made. So here you are. I plan on going to see this show.
