The news that Rep. David Dreier (R-CA) is next in line to succeed Tom DeLay isn’t exactly sitting well with some House Republicans. After all, this was supposed to be a decision made by the Republican conference, not foisted on the members by the leadership. There’s supposed to be a procedure, right?
There’s going to be a Republican Conference meeting today to decide who the new Majority leader will be. It will be interesting to see what emerges; David Dreier isn’t a household name (which may be to his advantage), but he also has some baggage and questions about his personal life — which shouldn’t be a big deal, but this is Reality — and he may not have the same respect (or fear factor) among his fellow Republicans as Tom DeLay does.
The question then becomes, if not Dreier, than who? Stay tuned, campers.
