Hurricane Rita is now a Category 3 and heading for landfall somewhere between New Orleans and Brownsville, Texas.
The accuracy of the map is always up in the air (pun intended), but based on my experience, the dot showing landfall between Corpus Christi and Galveston is probably accurate. So if you’re anywhere within the “cone of uncertainty,” get ready, and if you’re anywhere near the purple dot, get the hell out. Now.
I had a friend in Dallas e-mail me this morning and ask me what was the one hurricane preparation I wished I’d made before Katrina hit. My answer was — in all seriousness — do your laundry. You’re going to want to have clean clothes if you’re going to be without power for a long period of time, and if the worst should happen, you don’t want to be caught without clean underwear.
