Something Fell on Alabama

I have only been in Alabama once. It was in 2001 when I was moving from New Mexico to Florida, and I made sure I had enough gas to get through the state without stopping. It’s not that I have anything against the people per se, but my first memories of TV news were pictures of Governor Wallace standing in the schoolhouse door and the sheriff turning water hoses and dogs loose on the civil rights marchers. It was not a pleasant memory.

But I do feel sorry for the state now. They’ve been through Hell with the hurricane damage, and now Roy Moore, the nutsey Ten Commandments judge, is planning to run for governor.

The state’s license plates tell us that “Stars Fell on Alabama.” Well, if that means they’ve been irradiated by nuclear waste from an interstellar explosion, I guess that would explain it. But haven’t these people suffered enough?
