Today’s Nutsery

Cal Thomas says that in hindsight the left-wing media is to blame for all the exaggerations of death, destruction, and looting in the aftermath of Katrina in New Orleans. He also seems to think that it might have been part of a plot to make the president’s approval ratings go down and hoodwink Congress into giving up all that money for restoration based on these wild claims. He admonishes,

Journalists like stories about the black poor because it allows them to beat up on a supposedly “uncaring” Republican administration, though journalists mostly seem to ignore such people when a Democrat is in the White House.

Few white reporters want to question or imply anything negative when it comes from a poor, black person for fear that they might be tarred with the “racist” label. It didn’t help that some of New Orleans’ top officials confirmed many of the accounts of lawlessness.

But did they “know” these things, or were they repeating rumors?

Did journalists bother to ask them, or was the story too good to be hurt by facts?

Mr. Thomas is forgetting one small detail: most of the horror stories were being spread by right-wing “journalists” such as Rush Limbaugh and Pat Buchanan. Most of the SCLM news coverage that mentioned the rumors of rape and pillage did so by reporting them as only rumors and couched them in layers of caveats.

Cal Thomas is especially good at hindsight. You would be too if you had your head up your ass all the time.

Hat tip to NTodd.
