From the New York Times:
The special counsel in the C.I.A. leak case has told associates he has no plans to issue a final report about the results of the investigation, heightening the expectation that he intends to bring indictments, lawyers in the case and law enforcement officials said yesterday.
In other words, because the special counsel hasn’t said anything and has no plans to issue a final report, speculation is rife that he’s going to really come out and indict the hell out of some people. Meanwhile, more speculation abounds as to who will be indicted — Karl Rove? Scooter Libby? Mary Matalin? — and what will happen if they go and who will take their place. There’s even speculation that if Vice President Dick Cheney is forced to resign, Bush will appoint Condi Rice as VP, thereby setting her up as his heir apparent and putting in place the cage match of the century in the 2008 presidential race and Dick Morris’s wet dream: Condi vs. Hillary. Meanwhile, Karl Rove is lying low (there’s an image for you), cancelling appearances before conservative groups and fund-raisers; he may well be too busy planning for his own legal defense fund.
But the bottom line is that nobody who knows anything is talking, which leaves the rest of us to just guess…and talk. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Frustrating, isn’t it?
