A Tinfoil Hat for All Seasons

It used to be that the right-wingers went all batshit crazy when the Democrats were in power because they were sure that they would take away all their rights. The dreadful “guvamint” would tap their phones, spy on their meetings, and throw them into jail without probable cause.

Turns out they were right, except that it’s their guys that are doing all the snooping.

Months after the Sept. 11 attacks, President Bush secretly authorized the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on Americans and others inside the United States to search for evidence of terrorist activity without the court-approved warrants ordinarily required for domestic spying, according to government officials.

Add this to the news that the Pentagon is re-living the 1970’s by spying on peace protesters and the USA PATRIOT Act is headed for re-authorization, and we’re back to the good old days of Nixonian paranoia.

But remember, the Republicans are the party of smaller government and more freedom, so they’re doing this to protect you from unprovoked attacks of irony.
