Sen. Hillary Clinton bought herself a bit of well-deserved backlash with her endorsement of a law that would ban the desecretion of the United States flag. Liberals were pissed off and as Michael notes, right-wingers won’t buy it — they wouldn’t believe Ms. Clinton if she told them the world was round. The New York Times labels it as pandering, especially since there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of flag-burning going on except in countries where the U.S. isn’t popular.
It doesn’t matter if Sen. Clinton is sincere in her belief that, after consulting with veterans, the flag deserves special treatment. Her skirting around the constitutional issue — that flag burning is protected speech — reminds one once again of her husband’s tap-dancing around issues. It also makes it extremely difficult for her to be taken seriously when she speaks out on things she truly believes in without drawing a veil of skepticism over her motives.
