Happy Birthday, GWTW

On this date in 1939, Gone with the Wind premiered in Atlanta.

I first saw it in its entirety on my 21st birthday when they had a screening at the University of Miami. The print was pretty crappy, but since then — 1973 — the film has undergone a complete restoration, including putting back in the overture, entr’ acte, and exit music from the original that had been cut for re-release and television viewing. When you go see it, take along something to eat; at 222 minutes (almost four hours) by the end you’ll be quoting Scarlett O’Hara: “As God is my witness, I’ll never be hungry again.”

HT to Tom Allen at Music & Company.
