The Iraqi election seems to have come off without too much disruption. Good for them. Contrary to what the righties think, I am sure that only in their fantasies could they imagine that we of the left would wish that it hadn’t.
The next question is, of course, now what? What if the Iraqi people elected a parliament that said, in their first order of business, “Thanks, America; now get out”? Do you think we would? What if, in their second order of business, they decided to model their country on the Islamic Republic of Iran?
As we have learned in many countries where we’ve instituted “democracies,” we don’t always get the results we want. After all, we’re still struggling with it here.
