Randi Rhodes Update

As you probably heard yesterday, the news that progressive talk-show host Randi Rhodes was mugged was not true. (Apparently she tripped and fell while walking her dog.) The Air America host, Jon Elliott, who speculated on the air that she was mugged by someone trying to silence a liberal, has apologized for his comments.

That left some room for the Orcosphere to swoon and raise holy hell that they were being smeared by the left for something they didn’t do. Michelle Malkin claimed that Elliott’s gaffe destroyed Air America’s credibility. Apparently Ms. Malkin’s sense of irony is a tad off-kilter; she is still defending her attacks on Graeme Frost, the SCHIP kid, even though all of the allegations of the Frost’s hidden wealth that she fire-breathed about last week have been proven to be false. (Oh, and the aide to Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who leaked the story has fessed up…but not apologized.) The righties seem a bit touchy about people making erroneous statements, and they also seem to be on a hair-trigger about people speculating about who might be behind the possible mugging of a prominent left-wing radio personality, getting all huffy that someone from the right wing nutsery might physically assault someone for speaking out against the war and the Bush administration. Given the right wing’s propensity for bomb-throwing — “My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building,” and “We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity” — an attack on someone like Ms. Rhodes by one of their more ardent supporters is not entirely outside of the realm of possibility. That doesn’t excuse Jon Elliott for going over the top on his speculation, and I daresay that some of my fellow bloggers went that route, too. As for the righties’ knee-jerk response to idle chatter, it does prove that for some people, a guilty conscience is never very far below the surface.

At any rate, Randi Rhodes’s website is reporting that she’ll be back on the air on Thursday.
