Welcome to 2008. It’s going to be a quiet day here; my Lord of the Rings Platinum Special Edition (12 discs) and The West Wing Season 5 DVD’s arrived yesterday, so I’m indulging in a marathon of hobbits, orcs, wizards, and political wonks.
I’m also bracing for a blast of cold weather. According to the NWS, we’re due for a cold front to bring temperatures down to the freezing mark for overnight lows and highs in the 60’s tomorrow, a marked change from the record high of 84 we set the other day. So I’ll break out the sweaters and make sure the heating element works on the A/C unit. I have learned that this house is well-insulated; it takes a while to cool down, and it also takes a while to heat up. I’ll bring in the orchids, too. (As I type this, Tom Allen at CBC Radio 2 is playing selections from the Florida Suite by Frederick Delius.)
Oh, yes, I did have a great time last night. We had Cornish game hen, steamed vegetables, and an apple pastry concoction topped with our choice of sorbet and chocolate truffles. We toasted in the New Year, and then I drove home cautiously under the rockets’ red glare: Miami celebrates the New Year with fireworks.
Enjoy your day and if you’re watching the Rose Parade and endless football games, I hope your team wins.
