Oh, yeah; joking about someone taking a shot at Barack Obama is right on target, especially in front of the NRA.
During a speech before the National Rifle Association convention Friday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky, former Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee — who has endorsed presumptive GOP nominee John McCain — joked that an unexpected offstage noise was Democrat Barack Obama looking to avoid a gunman.
“That was Barack Obama, he just tripped off a chair, he’s getting ready to speak,” said the former Arkansas governor, to audience laughter. “Somebody aimed a gun at him and he dove for the floor.”
Hey, I’m the kind of guy who can make a joke about anything, but then I know that the first rule of comedy is timing, and the second thing is to know your audience. Telling an assassination joke in front of the NRA is just wrong.
Actually, telling an assassination joke period is just wrong. Period.
Mr. Huckabee has now issued an apology, saying he never intended to be offensive. Well, if he was trying to be funny, take my advice: don’t quit your day job. You’re much better at being a homophobic ass than a comedian.
