With the gas prices heading for $5 a gallon (and diesel way beyond it already), a lot of people are dumping their big SUV’s and going for new and more efficient vehicles, while others are hanging on to their reliable — and paid-for — road warriors. Meanwhile, dealerships are gasping for air. Which leads me to ask, tangentially…

What’s the longest you’ve ever owned a vehicle?

As most of you know, I’m still driving my 1988 Pontiac 6000 LE Safari station wagon that I bought in January 1989, so I’m going on twenty years with it. But if you’re counting transportation, I still have the Triumph three-speed bicycle that I bought for $50 new when I was a freshman in college in 1971, so that has the wagon beat by a few years.
