From the Miami Herald:
What caused a 252-foot freighter to slam into a barrier wall at the Miami Beach Marina early Sunday as it navigated through Government Cut remains under investigation, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The Rio Haina, still loaded down with containers, is docked at Bernuth Terminal across from the Port of Miami, not far from where the accident occurred around 1:20 a.m. Sunday.
”The freighter will be here until the investigation into what happened is completed,” said Coast Guard spokesman Barry Bena.
Early Sunday, as the Rio Haina left the Miami River and maneuvered through the cut to sail out to sea its crew said it apparently lost power and then its steering capabilities.
As it floated out of control, it sliced through a break-wall surrounding the marina, located just off the MacArthur Causeway in Miami Beach. It’s unclear how the freighter stopped before making it further into the property where expensive vessels are frequently docked.
I guess it’s a sign of my generation that the first thing I thought of when I heard about this was “Gilligan!”
