Short Takes

Sen. Obama goes along with the effluence.

Obama’s statement on the FISA “compromise” is in, and suffice it to say that it won’t make opponents of the Dem cave-in very happy. He’s supporting it.

Equal Justice? Not in Michigan.

A just-released, extensive new study of public-defender programs in the state has revealed shocking failures in the system.

The report found that the state, which once prided itself on the modernity and effectiveness of its justice system, is close to being worst in the nation in terms of its public-defender services. Michigan spends less per capita to defend people than all but six other states.

The title of the association’s final report pretty effectively captures it all: “A Race to the Bottom: Speed and Savings over Due Process: A Constitutional Crisis.”

Who do you call when an eight-foot gator shows up in front of your office?

If you work at the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue headquarters in Doral, you call … Miami-Dade fire rescue.

They came, they saw and they lassoed the reptile.

The call came in at 3:07 p.m. and the animal was bundled up within about half an hour.

– The British deny Martha Stewart a visa.

A representative of the British Borders Agency would not comment on Stewart, saying only that “we continue to oppose the entry to the UK of individuals where we believe their presence in the United Kingdom is not conducive to the public good or where they have been found guilty of serious criminal offenses abroad.”

Stewart was convicted on four counts of obstructing justice in 2004 for lying to investigators about her sale of ImClone Systems Inc. stock at the end of 2001.
