Tropical Update

Keeping tabs on this tropical disturbance:

With a tropical disturbance in the Atlantic marching in this direction — and threatening to become a hurricane — a suddenly vigilant South Florida hopes the system will make a hard right turn.

As the state’s first serious threat of the season, the disturbance was forecast to aim toward the southern Bahamas and turn north. Under the latest forecast, that still could bring its core perilously close to the South Florida coast.

If it fails to make that turn, this region could have a tropical storm or a hurricane at its doorstep by Monday or Tuesday, as forecasters expect the system to move into an area of low wind shear and continue intensifying. The next tropical storm will be named Fay.
