I wouldn’t exactly call it joyriding, but fortunately there was no cargo aboard.
The trip began and ended at church, just like always. But Wednesday morning’s hearse ride from Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church took a most unusual route.
Police say Johnny Silfrain, 18, went joyriding in a hearse he stole from outside the Carver Ranches church — while a funeral was taking place.
By the time his wild journey ended, he had a bullet hole in his leg, courtesy of a Broward sheriff’s deputy he nearly ran over, authorities said.
”This is obviously a first for me,” said Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti. ”We’ve had hearses stolen before, but not in the middle of the service.”
Authorities said Silfrain strolled into his parents’ Hallandale Beach home Wednesday morning, according to authorities, grabbed a Bible and a cross and then asked: Who wants to go for a ride?
He wasn’t talking about a spin in the family station wagon.
The kid can just count himself lucky he didn’t end up in the way-back.
