Short Takes

States Get to Set Clean Air Standards — President Obama will lift the federal restrictions – implemented by the Bush administration – on states to set their own air standards.

Republicans Resistant to Obama’s Stimulus Plan — because they know if it works it will prove they were wrong, and all they care about is winning. “Country first,” huh?

Gitmo Files a Mess — “President Obama’s plans to expeditiously determine the fates of about 245 terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and quickly close the military prison there were set back last week when incoming legal and national security officials — barred until the inauguration from examining classified material on the detainees — discovered that there were no comprehensive case files on many of them.”

Fed Oversight — Congress is considering granting the Federal Reserve broad oversight powers over financial institutions.

Native Rights Win — Bolivia gets a new constitution: “President Evo Morales seemed assured of an easy victory in a referendum on Sunday over a sweeping new Constitution aimed at empowering Bolivia’s Indians.”
