Stimulus Passes

The House passed the Obama stimulus package 244 to 188. Not one Republican voted for it.

Well, so much for “bipartisanship.”

Josh Marshall followed the debate and chronicles some really whopping howlers as the GOP railed against the bill, and Steve Benen fact-checks their arguments.

All I can say is that we tried it the GOP way for eight years. It didn’t work. Not only did it not work, it gave us the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. So, even in the spirit of bipartisanship, why should we listen to them? Clearly they haven’t had a good idea since they voted to repeal Prohibition, so even if they’re sincere in trying to get out of this mess without trying to score political points, what’s the point?

Meanwhile, President Obama can say that he went the extra mile; gave up things like funds for family planning and to restore the National Mall, took some heat from some of his supporters, and what did he get for it? Bupkus from the Republicans. Well, fine. Now he and the Democrats can go ahead and push through whatever they can come up with, and if the GOP pisses and moans — which they will, count on it — he can say, “Hey, you had your chance and you blew it. Dems da berries.”
