Tweaks Follow-Up

I got an e-mail from a helpful soul yesterday who said that he was on the JS-Kit team and said he was sorry to read about the problems my brother was having with the commenting system. He said he “attempted to leave a message on your site. Not sure if it got to you though …” The fact that he wasn’t sure the message got through — it didn’t — doesn’t say a whole lot about the efficacy of JS-Kit. He continued, “In any case, we are here to assist you to get up and running, including the restoration of all of your old comments.”

I appreciate the offer, but I think we’re going to be moving on to something new. Sometime in the next couple of days — once he’s sure it works perfectly — my brother will replace JS-Kit with a new commenting system.

Onward…

10 barks and woofs on “Tweaks Follow-Up

  1. MB, the email was from the “CEO of JS-Kit”, and though most earnest, I’m sorry to say they have a long way to go.

The system, though pretty, is very flaky. People have all kinds of problems commenting (from forgetting who they are to comments that simply disappear), you and I have both turned email notifications off more than once but I’m getting emails today (that insist that every comment on the blog is a reply to one of my comments), and we got a notification when we started that promised “an email with a kit to migrate all your Haloscan comments” yet we’ve seen nothing. Add in all the mutilation on the backend that happened to our new template and the troubles I had just getting it to work in the first place, and I can only say “ugh”…

It has promise, though. As I noted, it is pretty. And Akismet is clearly the right way to go wrt spam filtering. And if they could work out a way to absorb their Haloscan heritage they would be quite the leg up.

But alas, we don’t have time to wait it out. So, as you note… onward.

  2. Haloscan may have annoyed the hell out of many of your friends and commenters, but when one used it one could easily see what others had written in a “toilet paper” length of commentary that encouraged dialogue and a certain sense of community. We were all familiar with each other. Additionally, Haloscan allows self-editing so you can preview what you’re putting up and correct the spelling, the punctuation or even pull out some overly long blather. I’m glad Chris and MB are moving on to another form of “Speak”. The sooner the better.

  5. How is the IntenseDebate platform looking? I’ve long wanted to ditch Haloscan (or, as I like to call it Hell-0-Scam), but haven’t found an alternative I really like. Disqus isn’t bad, but really needs a “new comment” notification, or auto-refresh.

Anyway, not sure I’ve said, but I really like your new template. 🙂
