A Soft Answer

President Obama at Notre Dame yesterday:

I do not suggest that the debate surrounding abortion can or should go away. No matter how much we may want to fudge it – indeed, while we know that the views of most Americans on the subject are complex and even contradictory – the fact is that at some level, the views of the two camps are irreconcilable. Each side will continue to make its case to the public with passion and conviction. But surely we can do so without reducing those with differing views to caricature.

Open hearts. Open minds. Fair-minded words.

“A soft answer turns away wrath…” Proverbs 15:1.

It makes it awfully hard for people to rant and carry on like Mr. Obama was a fascist/socialist or whatever label of the week the Orcosphere hits him with when he comes up with these sentiments, which strike me as an essence of faith — either religious or otherwise — and an attempt to reach out to those who oppose you. It makes those who would demonize him appear to be the ones who are the intolerant and foolish.

HT to TPM.
