Whackos in Paradise

The Phelps gang is planning to protest here in Miami.

A small, radical Midwestern church that has made headlines for picketing Iraq War veterans’ funerals plans to protest an America it believes has gone pro-gay and anti-God with demonstrations in South Florida beginning this weekend.

Its targets are Calvary Chapel in Fort Lauderdale; St. Thomas Episcopal, University Baptist and Church of the Little Flower in Coral Gables; Temple Israel in Miami; the University of Miami Law School graduation, and the consulates of Japan, Israel, Argentina, Brazil and Chile, according to the website of Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan.

At least 15 protesters are making the trip, church member Shirley Phelps-Roper said in an interview.

Fifteen protesters? Wow, that’s quite the onslaught. Call out the National Guard.

If you’ve ever seen any of these people being interviewed on TV, you’ve seen the leaden gaze of the insane in their eyes. And while I believe they have every right to exercise their right to free speech and I don’t believe in such a thing as divine retribution any more than I believe that a mythical supernatural being would punish a nation by killing soldiers, I would marvel at the karmic coincidence of a lightning strike in the middle of this sorry crowd of pathetic and demented haters.
