If Only

Fifty-three Republicans, led by Rep Steven King (R-IA), are demanding that President Obama fire a member of his administration because he’s in favor of teaching tolerance and acceptance of homosexuality.

Fifty-three House Republicans have signed a letter to the Obama administration asking for the ouster of Kevin Jennings, an official charged with promoting school safety, because of his career as an advocate of teaching tolerance of homosexuality.

“As the founder of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, Mr. Jennings has played an integral role in promoting homosexuality and pushing a pro-homosexual agenda in America’s schools — an agenda that runs counter to the values that many parents desire to instill in their children,” the lawmakers write.

I don’t know what’s crazier: that these ignorant tight-asses think that there is something wrong with teaching kids that it’s okay to be gay, that there’s something wrong in fighting bigotry and homophobia, or that these presumptuous ninnies think that they know what parents might want their children to learn. I can’t speak for my parents, but I’m pretty sure that had I been offered the chance to learn in school that it’s not okay to hate someone because of their sexual orientation and that it’s perfectly all right to feel comfortable about talking about things like your sexual orientation with a trusted and sympathetic teacher, they would have been behind it one hundred percent. And so would a lot of other parents, especially the ones who happen to be gay or lesbian. If parents want their children to learn to fear and hate other people, they can do it in the privacy of their own home.

If only we did promote a pro-gay agenda in America’s schools. A lot of kids would be a lot better off.
