Question of the Day

The film adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are is out and doing pretty well at the box office. I’m afraid I’m a little too old to have been a big Sendak reader when I was a kid, although my younger brother had the books and I read some of them to him (he probably doesn’t remember that). I’ve seen my share of childrens’ stories adapted for the screen, both live-action and animated, and it got me thinking…

What’s your favorite film adaptation of a childrens’ story?

Mine is below the fold.

Actually, I can’t think of one. None of the stories I read as a kid that were meant for kids was as good on the screen as I was able to imagine in my own head, and some of them were so changed from the original (Mary Poppins comes to mind), that to compare them to the book(s) would be unfair. Sometimes I think there are just some stories that are best left in the original way.
