Question of the Day

CBS and Procter & Gamble have announced the end of the soap opera As The World Turns. This comes on the heels of the demise of Guiding Light in September. The reason they cite is the declining viewership from the peak in the 1980’s and 1990’s; fewer people are home during the daytime, and the core audience of older women (the median age for ATWT, according to the article, is 57.8). That’s not a demographic advertisers hunger for. But the end of the soap makes me wonder…

Did you ever watch a soap opera on a regular basis?

The only time I watched one was when I was in grad school in the 1970’s and worked nights. I was home during the day and got hooked on The Guiding Light because it came on after a re-run of All in the Family. I swear. When summer came and I went off to Colorado, I stopped and never looked back.
