Question of the Day

Shamelessly stolen from SKM at Shakesville:

What is/are your earliest current events memories? Tell us memories from every time and place. How did you process these events?

I remember my older brother and sister singing, “Whistle while you work, Stevenson’s a jerk,” so that had to be 1956 when Adlai Stevenson was running against Eisenhower again. It wouldn’t have been the election of 1952 because I was born a month and a half before it. I heard it as “Steven is a jerk,” and since I have an uncle named Stephen, I wondered why they were being mean to my dad’s brother. My first political involvement of any kind was in 1960 when my Cub Scout troop got drafted into handing out Nixon literature in my little home town. I found out later that my parents voted for JFK and I was pissed at them because they had let me be the good little GOP soldier.
