Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) is in a primary battle against a right-wing opponent, former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, so it stands to reason that he would try to campaign in a way that would blunt Hayworth’s impact with voters on the right wing of his party. What worked on a national level, when he was running for president, billing himself as a “maverick,” and trying to attract independents and Democrats, won’t work now. So naturally he’d say, “Hey, I realize what worked then might not work now, so my message is changed.” But to come out and say, “I never considered myself a maverick” — in this day and age of YouTube and Google — tells you that he’s running right… into a ditch.
HT to Michael.
