Doing Something

Ross Douthat takes up the delicate issue of immigration.

If you don’t like what Arizona just did, the answer isn’t to scream “fascist!” It’s to demand that the federal government do its job, so that we can have the immigration system that both Americans and immigrants deserve.

It might be a lot easier for the federal government to do its job if the Republicans weren’t the ones who blocked immigration reform under President Bush and are now saying that it won’t even be discussed this year.

It’s also a little ironic to hear conservatives complaining that the federal government isn’t doing enough about something. Usually their mantra is that it does too much.
