I suppose that Helen Thomas’s retirement after her impolite comments about Israeli settlements wasn’t a big surprise. Neither is the somewhat faux-outrage expressed by some commentators; it’s not like it’s ever been a secret that she has strong opinions about the Middle East and has asked pointed questions about our role there since the Kennedy administration.
What I find interesting is that she got hounded out of her job for saying something that wouldn’t get a raised eyebrow from the likes of Pat Buchanan or Glenn Beck. That raises the possibility that the next time one of them shoots off their mouth about people — any people, such as Mexicans or Haitians — “going back where they came from,” we can expect them to be forced into retirement. Hey, there’s always that hope.
