Intellectual Discourse

Almost as if he was trying to prove my point, Newt Gingrich is out there blowing the dog-whistle klaxon of racism and birtherism:

“What if [Obama] is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior, can you begin to piece together [his actions]?” Gingrich asks. “That is the most accurate, predictive model for his behavior.”

“This is a person who is fundamentally out of touch with how the world works, who happened to have played a wonderful con, as a result of which he is now president,” Gingrich tells us.

“I think he worked very hard at being a person who is normal, reasonable, moderate, bipartisan, transparent, accommodating — none of which was true,” Gingrich continues. “In the Alinksy tradition, he was being the person he needed to be in order to achieve the position he needed to achieve… He was authentically dishonest.”

This is the old-style Newt Gingrich, the one who was the Speaker of the House and told his minions never to mention the Clintons without using the word “criminal” in the same sentence; the same man who railroaded the impeachment of President Clinton for getting a blowjob while he himself was committing adultery with his staffer.

As you may remember, Mr. Gingrich single-handedly lost the 1998 mid-terms for the GOP and was kicked out of his leadership position by his fellow Republicans for the trouble. Now he’s back spewing this bilge, and he’s considered to be one of the leading intellectuals in the GOP.

By the way, Mr. Gingrich considers himself to be a historian. Perhaps he didn’t notice that America was founded by “anti-colonials.”
