Lou Dobbs, who made it his mission when he was still at CNN to pursue undocumented immigrants and hounded employers who hired them, apparently knows whereof he speaks.
Based on a yearlong investigation, including interviews with five immigrants who worked without papers on his properties, The Nation and the Investigative Fund at The Nation Institute have found that Dobbs has relied for years on undocumented labor for the upkeep of his multimillion-dollar estates and the horses he keeps for his 22-year-old daughter, Hillary, a champion show jumper.
Not like we couldn’t see that one coming a mile away.
Mr. Dobbs defended himself last night on MSNBC on Lawrence O’Donnell’s show, claiming that he never knowingly hired any undocumented workers and blamed it on the contractors he hired to work at the stable or on his estate. However, he’s also on the record as railing against people who even indirectly hired undocumented workers. And while it’s not true in every case, if you hire a landscaping firm in Florida, the chances are pretty good that you’re going to be hiring someone who doesn’t have all their papers. For all his skill as a reporter and advocate for legal immigration, it’s a bit of a stretch to think that Mr. Dobbs had absolutely no idea what was going on.
I get the hypocrisy. Hypocrisy and stupid are even better.
