The God Squad

Digby has a good long post about the hard-core religious fanatics that are determined to take over the government. Quoting from one of them:

I’m talking about an arrangement, the arrangement I’m talking about the the arrangement where God guides and governs the United States of America through statesmen who are committed to align the public policy of the United States with the will of God.

I am talking about an arrangement in which God, to borrow a phrase from the founding fathers, in which God governs and guides the United States through statesmen who are determined to align the public policy of the United States with the laws of nature and nature’s God. I’m talking about the same arrangement that Sam Adams spoke of on July 4th 1776, who said “we have this day, restored the sovereign to whom all men ought to be obedient. He reigns in heaven from the rising to the setting of the sun, let His kingdom come.”

Now I believe on November 2nd we have a fresh opportunity as the people of God to restore the sovereign to whom all people ought to be obedient and I say we do it.

This is Bryan Fischer, who earlier this summer suggested that there be a ban on building any more mosques in this country. He also has an obsession with the gay community, including comparisons to the SS and suggesting that “stabbing them with spears,” as depicted in the Bible, would be a good thing. Sigmund Freud could have made a fortune off this guy. Not only that, they seem to be completely ignorant of the glaring irony when they warn us about the threat of Islam and the nefarious plans of stealth jihadists to take over the country and impose sharia law and theocracy. That’s like getting a lecture on the evils of oil spills from BP.

Maybe because I have a heightened sense of awareness of this mindset — after all, they’re talking about me when they’re talking about roasting people on a spit — that I pay attention to them. These religious fanatics come out of the woodwork every time there’s a Democrat in the White House, even when the Democrat is a born-again Christian like Jimmy Carter. Jerry Falwell and his Moral Majority jug band came along just in time to vote out Jimmy Carter and get Ronald Reagan into office. We got a whole new cast and crew when Bill Clinton got his blow job, and they’re still out there, working a new gig with a new enemy: last time it was the queers; now it’s the Muslims. And if you’re a gay Muslim, you win this round of Bigotry Bingo.

It’s never a good idea to underestimate people like this; they have a funny way of getting into positions of power. But it’s also good to remember that they are easily manipulated, easily fleeced of money, and easy to blow off, so to speak. Both Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush milked the Religious Reich for their money and their get-out-the-vote and promptly ignored them once they were in office.

But it’s not the people like Bryan Fischer that we have to worry about. They’re the clowns of this act. It’s the ones who come off as reasonable by comparison; genial, self-deprecating and ready for prime time. People like Mike Huckabee are the ones to worry about.
